About the Garden
Garden Chat is hosted by Courtney in her suburban home garden just outside of Troy, Ohio. The property is small, under a quarter acre, and has been actively planted and reworked over the past ten years.
During that time, Courtney and her husband have planted approximately 20 trees and shrubs and created several distinct garden spaces, including a front yard pocket prairie, a moon garden, a woodland garden, a small rain garden, and an edible garden.
Each month, Courtney leads a relaxed walk through the gardens. We stop to observe insects, flowers, fungi, and seasonal changes, and there is plenty of time for questions about gardening with native plants and gardening for wildlife.
The goal of Garden Chat is simple: explore, learn, and enjoy being outside together.
About the Host
Courtney has been interested in nature since early childhood and has always appreciated some of the less celebrated wild creatures, including spiders, snakes, and bats. Bees and praying mantids are among her favorite insects, and she has been birdwatching since the age of 12.
Her garden focuses primarily on plants native to the Midwest, with a few favorite non native plants mixed in, including lavender, peonies, and lilacs. Sedges are a particular favorite and appear in nearly every garden bed.
What to Expect
This is an active, working garden. Courtney gardens throughout the year, and it is common for projects to be mid-completion during Garden Chat programs. Her style is intentionally informal and not manicured. You may see weeds waiting to be pulled and more than one dirt pile in the process of being relocated.
During the walk, we may spend extended time in certain areas. Chairs will be available, and participants are welcome to bring their own seating if standing for long periods is uncomfortable.
Garden Chat is intentionally relaxed. Perfection is not the point.
